Vegetarian awareness month

Every year on October 1st, World Vegetarian Day kicks off a month of parties, potluck, presentations, food tasting displays and lots of friendly discussions.

For those new to vegetarianism, it serves as an enticement to give meatless fare a try (even for a day) and learn about its many benefits. And, of course, it's the perfect occasion for vegetarians and those already moving towards plant-based diets to celebrate their healthy, compassionate food choices.

World Vegetarian Day and Vegetarian Awareness Month celebrations are as varied as the people who plan them. Whether you want to keep yours simple and private or public and grand — our ideas and resources can help.

In addition to individuals from all walks of life, past participants have included schools, colleges, health food stores, co-ops, restaurants, libraries, employers, healthcare centers and many others.

The view on vegetarian is quite different from our grandparents generation and the generation today.

Back then, vegetarian is not the popular choice of diet. Back then, our Chinese ancestors insisted to become a vegetarian after they have retired, so that they can try to 'repay all the sins that they they done, so that it will not affect the younger generation'. There is this Hokkein saying, 吃斋补残忍. It means that by being a vegetarian, you can repay all your sins. Back then, the vegetarian diet is not that well-liked by the teens.

However, in today's context, many people are opting for the vegetarian diet. Why? Because it is simply a more healthier choice! The amount of nutrients that you can gain from the vegetables are definitely more than the amount of 'nutrients' that you get from chewing meat. If you still have the traditional thinking that a vegetarian meal consists of only tofu and bean sprouts, you are very wrong! As a vegetarian myself, I enjoy my meals a lot. You will be surprised to find out the many ways you can prepare the tofu. :)

Famous celebrity, such as Angelina Jolie, is a vegan herself. Her healthy image that she portrayed inspired many of her fans, and some who were not her fans, to become a vegan too. It may be a good idea if vegetarian organizations invite famous celebrities to become their ambassadors. This maybe a good way to convey what the organization is trying to gring across.

So, have you had your vegan meal today?

Hi again! Hugs! There, i hugged a vegetarian today! Haha...

I myself prefer vegetables than meat though i'm not a vegetarian. There are such a wide range of tofu products available that looks like non-vegetarian food and also many tasty ways we can cook them.

To add on, here's the list of celebrities who are vegan too! http://www.happycow.net/famous_vegetarians.html

So, let's all be a vegetarian (at least for a day, please) and discover the healthiness of being one today! :)

I agree that certain vegetarian food are nice (vegetarian pasta!!!!)..however to an extent, being a vegetarian is one's faith in religion. There is nothing wrong with it..however, it lies in one's personal choice of becoming a vegetarian.

And i think i have not reach the enlightenment of becoming a vegetarian yet..hehs.

Recently, i noticed that there's an increasing number of people becoming vegetarians.

However, most of my friends who are vegetarians, did not become one due to religion. Instead, most of them are concerned about the various health issues.

I think that many people are becoming more health conscious, especially with the uproar of contaminated food products.

But i dont think im ready to become one. I still love my meat!!

Hi.. Yeah.. Vegetarian is the way to go!

We have to learn to respect the fact that animals like us have feelings..

"Do unto others as you would have others do unto you."

If we belive that we should not be devour by tigers,lions,etc... Then similarly, chicken, duck, fish, etc believe that they should not be food on the plate for human..

Learning to respect is the basis of love..

Vegetarianism is not a religious obligation, it is a humanitarian one...for the betterment of the world we are living in!

Hey there,

I do see your point in the post, but I believe it's very subjective to say that "The amount of nutrients that you can gain from the vegetables are definitely more than the amount of 'nutrients' that you get from chewing meat". I understand that as a vegetarian yourself, it must be a very negative sight seeing others eat differently. However, everyone has their different beliefs and perspectives of things, so I think it will only be fair to respect each other for their differences.

Of course, I'm not disagreeing with a vegetarian diet. I agree that it is definitely a healthy choice. I guess it still boils down to the individual and his/her commitment, which will be determined by a clear understanding of the purpose behind such a move, be it religious, health, animal rights, environment etc.

Cheers,
Despina
